Boat Wrapping Process

A boat wrap is the process of completely or partially covering (wrapping) a boat with printed laminated vinyl material, 3 m 2080 or solid colours.

Did you know, we can full colour digitally print a boat wrap design for you, that means we can put your custom artwork on your boat?

Wrapping a boat basically gives the boat a new look (“Fresh look”) at the fraction of the cost of a new paint job, while protecting your boat’s gel coat finish against fading and minor scratches.

Can You Wrap a Boat Yourself?

Generally, you shouldn’t try to wrap a boat on your own — it’s best to hire a professional to do it for you. The wrapping process is painstaking and requires extreme precision to make sure the graphic is as attractive as possible. If you try to wrap a boat without the proper tools or experience, you could end up harming the wrap’s lifespan and compromising its visual appeal.

Even though the application of boat wrap is best left to the professionals, it’s still a good idea for consumers to know what goes into the boat wrapping process.

Boat Wraps from Start to Finish

Whats the cost to wrap your boat?2021-12-28T20:38:30+10:00

This depends on a number of factors, = what is the condition of the surface of your boat?, The size of your boat, is it a full or partial wrap etc.

Please email us photos and the following details:- Size of your boat, full or partial wrap, your timeframe and contact details.

We will then provide a quote.

When and where to haul out?2022-07-15T10:05:54+10:00

Our workshop is based at the Boat works Coomera “Australia’s greatest boatyard”. Within the boat works there are so many marine trade services.

Often our clients get their boat hauled out and need other work done to their boat at the same time, the boat works is a great place to have all your needs provided for.

(Otherwise please contact us in regard to where your boat is, and we will sort out install)

We’ll need a relatively dust-free environment to wrap your boat. An indoor shed is ideal, but not totally necessary – Please note Rain, strong winds and extreme temperatures can prevent us from wrapping your boat, or affect the final finish, so try to time your haul-out with a forecast of warm, dry weather and light winds.

This is something you can discuss with us when booking.

Surface Preparation (Effects the finish or your wrap)2021-12-28T20:40:37+10:00

The Surface preparation of your boat is the most important part in order to get a good finish on your wrap, You’ll need to make sure your boat is prepped and ready for vinyl application before we arrive to wrap it.

*Note we do offer the preparation as an add-on cost if needed.

Please make sure the following is complete:-

  • Sound paint or gelcoat (no flaking or excessive chalkiness)
  • Dents and dings are filled and sanded back (any uneven areas will show up clearly under the vinyl)
  • Hull cleaned and free from marine growth, mould and mildew, any silicone residue from through-hull fittings cleaned away
  • Skin fittings removed (ideally, but if that’s not possible we can trim the surrounding vinyl.)
  • Fenders are ideally moved and taken away (otherwise dust and debris can fall down behind the wrap)
  • The boat is completely washed down top to bottom.

Please note: If you’re not sure about whether your boat’s surfaces are in a suitable condition for wrapping, please contact us.

Final inspection before wrapping (Boat check)2021-12-28T20:41:24+10:00

We will come and check your boat before we wrap it, to make sure the surfaces are correctly prepped, and there is sufficient access to the hulls.

Here at the boat works we have x3 of our own scissor lifts that we hire out, if needed we also use our scissor lifts to be able to wrap the sides of larger boats.

We will also talk to the boat works to ensure any obstructions like cradle arms can be moved when required, for wrapping your boat.

Final clean before wrapping2021-12-28T20:42:10+10:00

We will give the hull a final, last-minute clean. This is to ensure the surfaces are free from dust and grease that will affect the adhesion and finish.

Measure2021-12-28T20:42:46+10:00

The vinyl is measured, and sheets cut down to size.

Vinyl application2021-12-28T19:40:08+10:00

Primer is applied to the areas that may need extra adhesion, The vinyl is then applied by an experienced boat wrapping professional.

The vinyl is hung across the whole length of the boat. The backing paper is then removed, and the vinyl is pressed against the hull with a squeegee, and any bubbles are squeezed out.

Trimming & finishing2021-12-28T19:39:32+10:00

The vinyl is carefully trimmed around the gunwalls = (the upper edge of the side of the boat), waterline, and any fittings that have been left in place, and joins or seams are trimmed down to reduce their visibility.

A special edge sealant is applied to the waterline edge (and an other edges that may require it) to help prevent the vinyl from lifting or peeling, we then recommend you to anti foul just over the edge of the vinyl to further protect it from lifting.

Recommend anti fouling around 5 to 10 mm above the wrap.

Vinyl re-enforcement (Body Guard)2021-12-28T19:38:49+10:00

If required, we can re-enforce high wear areas like the bow, or areas where fenders frequently rub, to protect your vinyl finish for longer.

This material is called Body Guard and is a thick material that will help protect those areas.

Detailing – Names, Regos , graphics & stripes2021-12-28T19:38:02+10:00

Your boat is now wrapped, videos and photos are taken, and you’re ready to go back in the water and turn some heads!

How do I care for my Boat Wrap?

Take precaution when transporting and hauling your wrapped boat in and out of the water. Its important to add a protective layer between the wrap and lifts. (Example banner material in between.) Remember that straps and buckles can damage the wrap.

If you have your boat detailed, make sure a wax that is safe for vinyl is used.

Caring for your vinyl boat wrap is extremely easy, and needs to be done regularly to get the maximum life out of your new boat wrap.

It’s very important to keep the boat wrap clean as dirt and pollution left to sit on the surface will speed up the need to have to replace the vinyl.

Please do the following:

  • Keep it clean – whenever dirt starts collecting, it’s best to wash it off as soon as possible.
  • You do not need buffing and polishing – all you need is soap and water to keep your vinyl wrap clean.
  • Make sure you don’t use any abrasive cleaners or cloths on your boat wrap.

Please note: Failure to properly maintain your wrap can void the warranty on your investment.

Please contact us if you have any questions, and for all your boat wrap care and repair needs.

I damaged my boat wrap! What do I do now?

We will inspect the boat wrap first, and carefully remove the damaged area and apply a patch to repair your wrap. The Join will be kept to a minimum, so it can hardly be seen by the eye.

We have a database that we keep all our client boat wrap designs on file just for this purpose – don’t sweat it. Repairing a damaged boat wrap is a simple process that won’t keep you off the water for long.
